Whatever happened to Dane Donohue?
His debut album in 1978 featured the same top-flight session musicians used by Steely Dan. Now, after four decades in the woods, the 76-year-old has finally returned with a follow-up.
It’s difficult to think of a debut album with more musical muscle behind it than Dane Donohue’s self-titled 1978 LP.
At 29, the virtually unknown singer-songwriter from Ohio found himself in Los Angeles recording with a dream team of session players: Larry Carlton, Chuck Rainey, Jay Graydon, Ed Greene, Victor Feldman—all of them fresh off of Steely Dan’s landmark album Aja. The likes of Stevie Nicks (flying high off Fleetwood Mac’s monster album Rumours) and Don Henley (still soaking in the shimmering light of the Eagles’ Hotel California) were tapped to contribute background vocals.
“We often joked about me being the only unknown person on the album,” Donohue recalls with a chuckle.
