Donald Fagen: rare French magazine interview—translated!
A Q&A with the Nightfly from a 1983 issue of Claviers
Today is Donald Fagen’s 77th birthday. To mark the occasion, I’m publishing a rarely seen interview with the maestro from the French magazine Claviers. (Shout-out to longtime Expanding Dan subscriber and serious major dude Philippe Poudensan for his work on the translation!)
In the conversation from the April 1983 issue—making its first appearance on the internet here—Fagen discusses the history of his relationship with Walter Becker; the making of his debut solo album, The Nightfly; and his desire “to step back and devote myself to more personal things.” The Q&A is followed by a sidebar that gives readers a cursory album-by-album overview of Steely Dan.
Bon anniversaire, DF!
