The point about Fagen singing like an instrumentalist is key understanding why he succeeded despite having a very unconventional voice. Think of "Barrytown", "Haitian Divorce" and "Goodbye Look": the grooves of his stylistic approach are so deeply cut into those songs that it's difficult to imagine them reproduced by anyone other than a skilled Fagen impersonator.
