This legendary story always makes me so glad I’m not an audiophile and that it’s the quality of the songs that grabs me and not the quality of the sound. Katy Lied is still the Dan album I put on it I haven’t listened to them in a while. I just can’t see (hear?) how Bad Sneakers for example could be any better and I first fell in love with it listening on my car cassette player while driving my Mini Minor in a fog of road noise.
Thanks Jake, a fascinating story. I'd love to hear the mix with Phil Woods staying while the band fades out! I'm trying to do the audio equivalent of visualising it in my head!
Quite the story and one I wasn’t aware of since I wasn’t a subscriber when this was first posted. Jake, thanks for the link in the Don Breithaupt story. After all the effort everyone put into Katy Lied, to have so many things go wrong would have been a major gut punch. I can understand why everyone wanted to walk away in disgust. Bless Denny Dias for shepherding the project to completion. Katy Lied is still one of my favorite albums, there’s something about the songs and arrangements that are timeless. I’ve got both the original vinyl release as well as the Becker/Fagan CD Remaster with their wonderfully quirky notes. In any form Katy Lied floats my boat.
