Steely Dan: 'We're back with a vengeance'

Listen to Walter Becker and Donald Fagen talking about 'Two Against Nature' on NPR in 2000.

“Do you think of this as a second act?”

Linda Wertheimer, the National Public Radio veteran and host of All Things Considered, is speaking with Walter Becker and Donald Fagen about Two Against Nature, Steely Dan’s first studio album in two decades.

“There are no second acts in American life,” replies Fagen, ever the smart aleck.

“I’ve heard that,” Wertheimer says with a laugh.

“That’s just a rumor, though,” Becker adds. “I hope.”

Our celebration of Two Against Nature’s 25th anniversary continues with this brief but amusing segment that aired February 22, 2000, but is no longer available on NPR’s site.

During the conversation, Becker and Fagen touch on their “pantheon of sleazy characters,” the hallmarks of a midlife crisis, and Steely Dan’s new-fangled website, which had been likened to “a stream-of-consciousness coloring book.”
